I have a $50 Franc and I would like to change it into US Dollars - where can I go to do this? The local bank was of no help.

Hmmm… You can look at a place called Deak Perrera. I’d google it and see what happens. American Express Travel used to do it…

You’ve got to go to a commercial bank or check-cashing place. They will chatge a significant amount to do so, however. Try American Express or larger multi-national bank in your area. You may find it cheaper to hold onto the foreign exchange, if you don’t need it right away and are planning on re-visiting country where francs are accepted.

Where’s the Franc note from, France? If so, it’s no longer valid currency and I don’t think you’d find anyone here in the States to exchange it for you. In France you could probably take it into a bank and get Euros instead, but not here.

Assuming it’s from somehwere else, your best bet is to find the largest branch of your local bank who will normally have bureau de change facilities, also American express travel offices, or an international airport. If you live in a large metropolitan area, some of the banks may even have ATM’s that will do the exchange for you - there’s several close to me that do that, although it’s usually only for half-a-dozen major currencies.
