Is it better to exchange money at home or at your destination?
March 6th, 2010 | by mon-ex |Silas B asked:
If I am going to travel to a different country, and I live in the USA, is it a better rate if I exchange my US currency into the foreign currency here in USA, or should I wait until I arrive at my destination and change monies there?

Exchange Money at Destination is better
Traveler cheque or credit card/debit card are better to carry the money but some cash US$ need to pay the airport tax. However, US Dollar everywhere has wide popularity and great exchange rate

You’ll generally get the best rate if you use your ATM card to withdraw money in the local currency when you get to your destination. This is especially advantageous if your US bank reimburses your account for fees from other banks like mine does. If not, you can minimize fees by withdrawing larger amounts and making fewer transactions. ATMs are widely available and most are on the major international circuits here in Europe. The next best thing is usually to exchange money at a main branch of the bank where you have an account.
Traveller’s Checks are not particularly useful any more. I don’t know of many places outside of banks that will accept them here in Italy for example.
